Hey Guys,
In 2010, we are expanding our Australian based Marketing strategy and Project Management firm. From March onwards, I will be on the ground in Boston, working closely with Start-ups and US companies, delivering marketing, mentorship, capital and support.
In addition, I am working on collaborative movements to connect Australian and US marketers and would welcome discussions at a later stage.
Further, we are growing our east coast freelance network and would like to offer opportunitie…

I was meeting with a connection last night and we talked a little bit about blogging. (OK, it was a 1:1 with a
BNI member…for those of you who drank the BNI Kool Aid.) We were talking about my business development strategy, which includes blogging as a foundation for my social media strategy. She responded with “I don’t really have time to blog.” And I asked “Is it lack of time, or is it that when you do have time you don’t know what to write abo…

I know this is a marketing forum, but (like it or not) we are all in sales. I'd like to talk to you for a minute about selling.
Today I called a vendor that for some time has been selling software to our company. The purpose of my call was to buy additional licenses so that more of our employees could use the software. I wanted to triple or quadruple the number of licenses we currently have and I had the expectation that it would cost me about $10,000 more per year to do so.
So I called the to…

Online branding refers to an organization’s marketing presence on the Internet, including its website, social media, blogs, paid search, podcosts, webinars, videos, mobile, and email communications. Offline branding is facilitated through non-Internet channels, such as TV, radio, print, direct mail, outdoor, events, packaging, and the interpersonal in-store experience.
The online branding goal is for the web viewer to see a similar logo, color scheme, font selection, tag line, and expressed val…

When it comes to sharing your company with the world, the typical website content components include: company presentations, product/service descriptions, feature lists, data sheets, case studies, testimonials, etc. As we adapt to the digital revolution that is now rapidly spreading across the web, innovative content vehicles are popping up everywhere. The vehicle that intrigues me the most these days is video.
Video content allows businesses to engage with their customers on a whole new level.…

Recently, a team member and I provided operational support to one of our expansion stage portfolio companies, by completing an analysis on their customer facing content. Our goal was to understand the key issues and pain points faced by their prospects, so that we could make recommendations as to how the company can enhance their content marketing strategy to address these concerns.
We structured out a project summary and got together an organized work plan. Once we had by-in from everyone invo…

Suppose you want to name your business or a product after yourself. Can you legally do it? Yes, you can and here’s how:
A personal name can be trademarked if you can demonstrate that the name has a “secondary meaning.” Personal names are considered to be weak marks. For the purposes of trademark registration, secondary meaning may be assumed after five years of continued and exclusive use of a mark. You need to form an association in the mind of the consumer that links the product with its your…

Today, ROI is the king of all marketing objectives. Investors and executives alike demand to know how each marketing dollar invested is generating a return in profit, customer acquisitions, number of transactions or other selected benchmarks. Yet while ROI is the king of objectives, social media seems to be the queen of marketing strategies. Therefore, confusion results. Marketers are racing for the social media land grab faster than Tom Cruise in ‘Far and Away,’ but is a measurable ROI flag pla…

B2B cold calling isn’t as common as it used to be, which is a big reason why skilled, ambitious professional sales reps should be doing more of it. If everyone was doing it, you might have a tougher time trying to get your foot in the door. But because of building security issues, caller ID, and do-not-call registries, along with the hope that networking and social media will get reps to their quota, cold calling has suffered as an respected sales tool in recent years. Your unskilled colleagues…

A friend of mine created a website that he wanted to promote nationally and he is wondering how to promote it. He started down a path of considering non-targeted advertising like billboards, printed flyers, radio, and TV. I helped him slam on the brakes for these promotional ideas pretty quickly. If you are thinking of promoting your website to any audience outside your neigborhood, here are some thoughts.
If you are trying to reach visitors across a broad geographic region, you should forget t…

If you use independent contractors as your sales reps, you have little control over their actions and methods in the field. A major risk in this arrangement is that the rep may not invest the necessary time/effort to become properly trained and knowledgeable of your company and product line. If that’s the case, you need to make it as simple as possible for the rep to sell.
I recommend that you create a professional multi-media PowerPoint, video, or pitchbook presentation that the rep can delive…

Over the last 20 years, I have managed a sales teams of all sizes – with as many as 50 reps – and I have used a variety of these methods for identifying high-quality candidates.
First, behavioral interviews can be very effective in determining a candidate’s suitability because past behavior is a strong indicators of future performance. This method also helps determine how well a candidate thinks on his/her feet without memorizing answers to common interview questions.
Starting with a phone int…

Marketing communications (marcom) is a discipline separate from other marketing functions like market research and product management/marketing. Marcom is centered on the development and delivery of the organization’s messaging to its target market. Recently, I was asked for advice from a manager hosting his company’s sales conference. This is a difficult task: meetings are generally very expensive, inconvenient, disruptive, and temporarily counter-productive in hopes of increasing productivity over the longer term. How effective your conference will be is determined by how well you plan for it. I have been responsible for hosting dozens of sales meetings and company kickoff meetings over the years. Here are my seven rules for success that…

I have been asked about the effectiveness of sign spinning as a method of outdoor advertising. Sometimes called “human directionals,” sign spinners attempt to draw attention to sales and special events through the use of people holding signs in public places.
This concept is controversial: it doesn’t resonate with a lot of people, while others are intrigued by it. A blog post on sign spinning received well over 600 diggs and 200+ comments, which indicate that sign spinning definitely captures a…

There are layers to our careers as marketers that are often overlooked. Anyone actively involved with AMA knows that while the group is not perfect, the rewards working with other marketers is well worth the time and commitment.
Yesterday, another layer was revealed at AMA Boston's "Marketers Giving Back" event. This was a volunteer event hosted by
Community Servings in Boston. The basic idea was a group of us volunteered our time on a busy…
